Bologna (Italy), Tuesday 18 June 2019

The Department of Chemistry “Giacomo Ciamician” of University of Bologna organizes the “2° Workshop on Biosensors for Security”, an International workshop dedicated to biosensors and their applications in security and environmental monitoring fields.

Biosensors represent an unvaluable analytical tool especially the diagnostic area, yet their implementation in devices for on-site detection of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) threats is still in its infancy. There is a rapidly escalating demand in our society for simple, reliable and effective means for monitoring the environment to rapid warn for potential health threats. Indeed a rapid response to a chemical or biological terrorist attack, as well as to an accidental release of toxic environmental pollutants, requires the ability to rapidly monitor and detect with high accuracy and sensitivity chemical or biological agents, so that an early warning can be raised, potential health risks defined, and proper countermeasures are employed. Biosensors, thanks to their peculiar features, represent a suitable tool for this challenging task, and the Workshop will entail both basics and applied knowledge, including biosensor design, transduction principles, nanotechnology, label-free biosensing, whole-cell biosensors, imaging,  and will also cover other aspects related to protection and decontamination.

The workshop is primarily targeted to PhD students, post-docs, and young researchers who work in the fields of biosensors or security.

The workshop is co-organized with the contribution of the project “Cell Biosensors” funded by NATO-SPS .
