Who the ceremony is for
PhD graduates of cycles XXXIV and XXXV who earned their degree by December 31st, 2023 and signed up for it

General information
The Ceremony will be held on Monday, June 10 2024, at 7 PM, in Piazza Maggiore, Bologna
Accreditation and academic dressing procedures
We ask you to arrive on June 10th at Palazzo d'Accursio, entrance from via IV Novembre, sottoportico del cortile del Pozzo from 4.30 PM for the academic dressing procedures.
The utmost punctuality is required to allow the academic dressing procedures and the subsequent composition of the processions.
For accreditation, you will need:
- an identity document (it will be kept for the collection of the academic gown and returned upon its return)
- the release form (that you can find attached) authorizing the University to use photos and audio/video footage taken during the ceremony for institutional purposes
- a copy of your identity document, to be attached to the release form
Access to Palazzo d'Accursio and to Cortile del Pozzo, where the dressing will take place, will be granted only for PhDs.
We ask not to leave goods and valuables unattended in the dressing room, for which we decline all responsibility. We also recommend not to wear bulky bags during the procession and throughout the ceremony.
The ceremony will last approximately two hours. The return of academic dresses and caps at the end of the ceremony usually takes about half an hour.
Dress code
You will wear the academic gown and cap throughout the ceremony. However, formal, adequate clothing is required, as it will be visible in the procession in the lower part, under the gown. Please, avoid shorts and open sandals.
Composition of the processions (starting from 6.15 PM) and official start of the ceremony (7.00 PM)
The procession is a part of the ceremony that requires particular attention.
The Procession of Doctors of 2024 will be the first to leave, followed by the Procession of PhD Coordinators, the Procession of Heads of Department, the Procession of Vice Rectors, and the Rector's Procession.
The procession will be organized into six scientific areas; similarly, the sessions will be grouped according to the same areas.
Please follow the instructions of the people responsible for the line-up of the processions and take a seat where indicated.
Programme of the day
After an introductory speech by the Rector of the University of Bologna, Prof. Giovanni Molari, Mayor Matteo Lepore will bring the city's greetings to the doctors.
This will be followed by two speeches aimed at highlighting the role of research, and of PhD programmes as its starting point, in the process of constitution and evolution of society.
The inaugural speeches will be given by:
Manuela Ferracin, PhD in Pharmacology and Molecular Oncology, Coordinator of the PhD Course in Oncology, Hematology and Pathology, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna
Alessandro Vanoli, PhD in European Social History, historian and writer
At the end of the speeches, the public group proclamation of the Doctors of Cycles XXXIV and XXXV will take place.
Collective and public proclamation
At the end of the speeches, the speaker will ask all Doctors to stand up for each scientific area (area of Biological, Geological and Agricultural Sciences, area of Legal, Political, Economic and Statistical Sciences, area of Engineering and Architectural Sciences, area of Mathematical, Physical, Chemical and Astronomical Sciences, area of Medical, Pharmaceutical and Veterinary Medical Sciences, area of Humanistic Sciences), then the Rector will solemnly proclaim the Phds of cycles XXXIV and XXXV.
Phds are not expected to take the stage.

Photos and photo release waiver
There will be a photographer of the University on the day of the Ceremony.
During event accreditation, PhD graduates must submit the release form filled in and signed, together with a copy of their ID document.
The release form will allow the University to have photo/video material useful for institutional communication.
In addition to the official photographer, who will take the photos during the event, two positions will be set up where you can have yourself photographed for free, before the start of the ceremony (by 6:00 PM), with cap and gown. Photos will be sent to you in the following days to this email address.
Guests
Guests registered through the registration form will be able to seat in Piazza Maggiore, in the dedicated area, starting from 6:00 until 6:45 PM. We advise everyone to arrive early to sit as close to the stage as possible.
