Who the ceremony is for

PhD graduates of cycles XXXI, XXXII and XXXIII who signed up for it.

General information

The Ceremony will be held on Tuesday 20 June 2023, at 5 PM, in Piazza Maggiore, Bologna.

Participants will be invited to join the venue a couple of hours before the starting time to go through the academic dressing procedure (further details will follow upon registration). Academic dress (gown and cap) will be provided by the University of Bologna upon presentation of a document and must be returned at the end of the ceremony. The ceremony will last approximately two hours. The returning of academic dress at the end of the ceremony usually takes about half an hour.

Programme of the day

After an introductory speech by the Rector of the University of Bologna, Prof. Giovanni Molari, Mayor Matteo Lepore will bring the city's greetings to the doctors.

 This will be followed by two speeches aimed at highlighting the role of research, and of PhD programmes as its starting point, in the process of constitution and evolution of society.

 The inaugural speeches will be given by:

  • Cristiana Di Valentin (Department of Materials Science & Centre for Bionanomedicine, University of Milano-Bicocca): Professor of General and Inorganic Chemistry, expert in quantum and classical simulations of nanostructured materials for energy and nanomedicine. Coordinator of the NanoQlab research laboratory, Deputy Coordinator of the PhD in Materials Science and Nanotechnology, Deputy Director of the Nanomib Bionanomedicine Centre at the University of Milano-Bicocca. Associate editor of the journal Materials Today Chemistry and member of the editorial board of the journal Nanomaterials.
  • Luciano Bossina (Department of Historical, Geographical and Ancient Sciences, University of Padua): full professor of Classical Philology, expert in the field of Hellenistic and late antique Greek philology, ancient Christianity, history of philology. "Chaire Gutenberg" of the University of Strasbourg; associate editor of the series "Fragmente der Griechischen Historiker - History of Literature, Music, Art and Culture" and "The Legacy of Antiquity". Associate editor of "Rivista di Storia del Cristianesimo". Member of the editorial board of the series "Letteratura cristiana antica", "Nuovi Testi Patristici", and the journals "Quaderni di Storia" and "The Vatican Library Review".

 

At the end of the speeches, the public group proclamation of the Doctors of Cycles XXXI, XXXII and XXXIII will take place.

Photo release waiver

There will be a photographer of the University on the day of the Ceremony.
During event accreditation, PhD graduates must submit the release form filled in and signed, together with a copy of their ID document. 
The release form will allow the University to have photo/video material useful for institutional communication.

Families and guests

Given the capacity of the venue and the number of PhD graduates involved, a maximum of 2 guests per PhD graduate may take part in the ceremony. Guests will have their own reserved seat in Piazza Maggiore.
