CONFERENCE SOCIAL TRIP TO RAVENNA
Ravenna is a charming town on the Adriatic coast that preserves an exceptional artistic heritage. Between the V and the VIII centuries, Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire, of the Ostrogoth’s Kingdom and of the Byzantine Empire. The traces of this past can be seen in the wonderful ancient buildings and in the eight UNESCO World Heritage sites.
This three-hour tour is a journey into Ravenna’s fascinating past.
Our tour starts with a glance at the Roman Period (V century). We will visit the magnificient Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. The Roman Empress, a very religious woman, built this place to preserve her remains and those of her family.
Then we will discover the age of Theodoric, the Ostrogoth King (V-VI centuries) in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, a Palatine church decorated with mosaics telling stories about Jesus and representing important places of ancient Ravenna, such as the Palace of Theodoric.
We will admire the splendour of the Byzantine period (VI century) through the imposing Basilica of San Vitale, with its unique octagonal shape. This Basilica is famous for its marbles and for the beautiful mosaics depicting the Emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora.
We will visit Piazza del Popolo, the beautiful Town Hall square, and finish our tour with a short visit to one of the many mosaic workshops.
More details about the lunch venue will be available soon.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
We recommend comfortable shoes and clothing throughout the conference. If you plan to take part in the social trip to Ravenna, please bring clothes suitable for places of worship.
