The ever-increasing sophistication and specialization of scientific research, and the resulting technological advances, have numerous and potentially unpredictable implications on people’s lives. It is especially urgent for academics to resume the reflections on the foundations of research, and examine them critically.

The impact of scientific knowledge on citizens and society raises central questions that the University of Bologna actively explored in a series of three events promoted by the then University Vice-rector for Research, prof. Alberto Credi:

Each meeting involved representatives of the university and leading voices at national and international level from institutions, research funding bodies, evaluation bodies and research organisations in general.

A position paper summarising the key concepts emerged from the discussion has been published after each event.
