Ethics and Academic Freedom

What new ethical concerns and potential risks for research freedom are we confronted with? What actions should institutions and researchers put in place to turn them into opportunities? Which are the measures to protect, facilitatestrengthen and optimize academic freedom? How to ensure an adequate balancing between opposite interestto build a responsible research ecosystem?

We are pleased to announce the publication of the Position Paper related to the event "Back to Fundamentals of Research - Ethics and Academic Freedom" which took place online and in-person on Monday, December 2nd, 2024.

The position paper provides a concise overview of the content discussed during the keynotes and roundtables and outlines the recommendations of the University of Bologna regarding three significant challenges addressed during the event:

  • the multiplicity of ethical declarations, rules and committees;
  • the risk of underestimating of the interplay between ethical responsibilities and academic freedom;
  • the potential interference of research security in excellent science.

The Position Paper is available in our university repository and can be accessed at the following link: https://doi.org/10.6092/unibo/amsacta/8225

We encourage everyone to share the document to foster an effective debate on these crucial issues at both national and international levels.

The meeting has fostered discussions on the different ethical dimensions of research, exploring possible new ethical concerns and risks for research integrity and their interplay with institutional autonomy and academic freedom. It has indicated the need to ensure that researchers, institutions and other stakeholders contribute to co-create responsible research processes.
