He is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bonn and Director of the German Reference Centre for Ethics in the Life Sciences, a Research and Documentation Centre of the University of Bonn and the North-Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Science and the Arts. He is Philosopher and Biologist and serves as Secretary General of the European Network of Research Ethics Committees (EUREC); he is Visiting Professor of Ethics in the Study Abroad Programme at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles and Honorary Professor at the University of Applied Sciences Bonn Rhein-Sieg. He is a member of several ethics boards and committees: Vice-President of the Central Ethics Committee of the German Medical Association, Chair of the Research Ethics Committee of the Johannes-Rau-Research-Association, Member of the Research Ethics Committee of the North Rhine Medical Association, Member of the Ethics Committee of Maastricht University, Vice-Chair of the Commission on the Ethics of Security-Relevant Research (University of Bonn). He is member of Editorial Boards of several scientific Journals: Research Ethics Review, Zeitschrift für medizinische Ethik, and others. He has been awarded the Order of Gratitude by the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Malta.
