Bologna: Getting There

Putting Bologna at the centre of this reflection

Emilia-Romagna is one of the most developed regions in Europe and one of the most famous for the high quality products that are developed here, a true expression of the well-known distinction "Made in Italy". At the forefront also in many aspects related to sustainability, Emilia-Romagna was the first Italian region, and among the first in Europe, to add the principle of circular economy in a provision of law in 2015, identifying the tools and paths to achieve it and creating a permanent forum as a tool through which to promote strategies and actions on the circular economy.

Bologna is at the center of the second manufacturing district of Europe, it is the capital of the Region that has the highest level of economic prosperity per capita in our country, one of the highest on the continent, is home to the oldest university in the Western world, is a place where industry, culture and creativity coexist for many centuries and generate wealth, knowledge, civilization. Bologna already has several examples of foundations, associations, companies, experiments, considered significant and active on issues concerning social and technological innovation.

Bologna is also recognized as the heart of the so-called Packaging Valley a network of 250 companies specializing in packaging machines located near the capital of Emilia Romagna.

The sector of packaging machines is one of the most important in Italy, and represents, together with Germany, a leading country and a true global excellence in this field. The best machines for packaging automation in the food and beverage, consumer products, tobacco and pharmaceutical sectors are designed and produced in Emilia-Romagna and especially in the province of Bologna.

For all these reasons, Packaging, Sustainability and Innovation have become research topics of the Advanced Design Unit of the Department of Architecture of the University of Bologna, and the subject of the International Symposium that is organizing on the subject. We therefore think that Bologna is a suitable place to host this event and the resulting Observatory, since this rich and important territory has proved fertile to develop virtuous processes and projects.
