If you cannot be bothered with all the hassle

It’ll be hot at the end of June and you will be jet lagged! You can always take a taxi straight up to Bertinoro from the Bologna Airport. This should cost about 150 Euro. Make sure you agree on the price with the driver beforehand. If you share the cost with two or three people, it will be well worth it.

You can also hire a car from the airport, all companies will be there but DO BOOK ahead so that there is a car available for you. Please note that some of the car pick up points are not actually at the airport. They will arrange transportation to the site for you but it will take additional time.

Getting to Bertinoro

GPS coordinates: Latitude: 44.148913 - Longitude: 12.132533

The town of Bertinoro is situated halfway between the cities of Forlì and Cesena, 6 km away from the SS9 thoroughfare (Via Emilia). Forlì is the town of reference for transport to and from Bertinoro.

Flights from main USA airports are available direct to Milan Malpensa (MXP) and Linate (LIN), or into Bologna Marconi (BLQ) via, for example, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, London. Bologna Marconi is about 80 km away from Bertinoro and has daily flights direct to and from all major European cities, as well as the Middle East, Russia and Balkans.

The Forlì airport (FRL) now offers flights to different European locations.

The small airports including Rimini (RMN) and Ancona (AOI) have some European flights, but are more complicated transport wise than Bologna. From any arrival point, you would still need to reach Forlì by train.

1.      Take the MARCONI EXPRESS (People Mover) to BOLOGNA CENTRALE Train Station

It's about a 7 minute trip. You can buy the tickets online (€9.20 one way or €17 return trip). Trains run from 5:40 am to midnight, every 7 minutes from the airport to railway station. (

To find the Marconi Express- follow the yellow arrows from the arrivals area.

It's about a 20 minute trip. You must purchase the tickets from the machine inside the airport doors near the bus stop (€6 cash, credit or debit cards). From 7:00 am to 9:30 pm a bus runs between the airport and the railway station every 11 minutes. (

The bus stop is to the right, further along the front of the building, if you are in front of the Taxi Rank.

You can also consider sharing a taxi to the train station with another conference delegate (taxi to station generally costs about €15-€20 per trip).

3.      Take a train to FORLI’. (

You can buy your tickets on line, in the app or at a ticket machine at the station. To be on the safe side, give yourself at least an hour and a half between landing and the train time as you will have to go through passport control and there may be queues.

Regionale” train tickets (€6 about a 50 minute trip) are valid for the train you booked or another "regionale" for 4 hours after the originally booked train. They are not valid for a train departing before the train booked.

"Intercity" and "Freccia Argento" (€10/€13 about a 30 minute trip) are only valid on the train booked and for the assigned seat. There is only 1 stop between Bologna and Forli.

4.      Take the CONFERENCE SHUTTLE from the Forli' train station to BERTINORO

A. There will be a shuttle service from the Forli Station to Bertinoro. Times to be announced in early June 2020.

B. There is also a Taxi service immediately outside the Forlì train station (+39 0543 31111). Ask them to take you to “ROCCA BERTINORO

C. If you prefer to take the bus use Number 134 from the “PuntoBus” (Bus Point) close to the railway station (turn left out of the station). Get off at Forlimpopoli and catch a second bus, line 121 headed to Bertinoro.  (

Google Maps will take you to 'Via Frangipane 6 Bertinoro 47032' which is at the conference centre up at the top of the hill.

From Bologna: take the Forlì exit on A-14 highway and follow signals for Cesena-Forlimpopoli-Bertinoro.

From Rimini: take the Cesena “Nord” (North) exit on A-14 highway and then follow the E45 towards Rome until Cesena “Ovest” (West) exit. Turn right on SS9 (Via Emilia), direction Forlì-Bologna. Follow signals for Bertinoro.

For info:

The University of Bologna’s Residential Centre is situated in a recently modernized mediaeval stronghold and its fortified walls, set on a hilltop overlooking acres of beautiful Italian countryside, terraced vineyards and the Adriatic sea. Situated half way between the city of Bologna and the Republic of San Marino and the Adriatic coast it is a superb location for hosting the ISHS conference.

The complex is located at the top of the built up area of the ancient town of Bertinoro.  It lies inside an age old Stronghold and consists of three large, historical, monumental buildings which were restored and refurbished in 1994. Since then the centre has been functioning both as the University’s Summer School and as the site of national and international conferences.

Bertinoro is an extremely intimate conference venue as all the buildings involved are virtually a few meters from one another and the town itself is just a short downhill walk away.
