Travelling, accommodation, kindergarten and other services

Bologna lies in the North-East of Italy and is the main hub between North and Central Italy. As such, it is conveniently reachable by train. Trains are operated by Trenitalia and Italo, with connections from and to France, Switzerland, Germany and Austria (check also these countries' railway services, as some connections are operated by them).

Bologna is served by the Gugliemo Marconi airport, which is seven minutes distant to the central station by Marconi Express monorail. Other suitable airports are Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate (one hour by fast train from Milan central station), Bergamo Orio al Serio, Florence (40 minutes by fast train from Florence central station), Venice Marco Polo (1,5 hour by fast train from Mestre central station).

Finally, long-distance bus services run to and through Bologna from other European countries.

We suggest participants to take into account environmental aspects when choosing the means of transportation and operators. While the STSItalia 2023 organizing committee does not endorse any specific operator, we have had access to reduced fares negotiated by Bologna Welcome (the city of Bologna touristic office), which we report below. Please refer to Bologna Welcome for any question about reduced fares.

Accomodation

We recommend participants to book accommodation as soon as possible. Late June is considered high season for tourism in Bologna and hotels will likely be fully booked weeks before the start of the conference. As a university city, Bologna is served by low cost hotels and B&B, which you can book thorough the well-known web services and traditional agencies. More high-end hotels are also available.

Kindergarden

While neither STS Italia nor the University of Bologna run any kindergarten service, we have tried to accommodate a feasible solution for participants who are in the condition to bring their children along. The Kinder School in Bologna (https://www.educationk.com/en/home_en/#) has agreed to host children and babies from 18 months to 13 years (Kinder Haus: from 18m.o.to 6 y.o. // Kinder College: from 6 y.o. to 13 y.o.) for the short period of the Conference, at their usual fees (50 euros per day, lunch included). Schools are open from Monday to Friday, 7.30-18.30.

Bologna Congress Card for the IX STSItalia Conference 2023

Thanks to the Bologna Convention Bureau, participants to STS 2023 can activate the Bologna Congress Card.
